How did The Backyard Birdhouse start?

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

Over 30 years ago my Dad and I decided to do a fun little weekend project...build a birdhouse together. Yes...ok...I was in my early 20’s but still, it was fun.

The birdhouse that started it all

Since then, the house that started it all, has provided a home to many bird families in three backyards. Despite needing new coats of paint and a new screw here and there, the birds keep coming back. In fact a family moved in just yesterday! It now sits high above our sundeck where over the past few months we have seen, and heard, bird families come, grow and go (and help our garden grow!). This inspired me to start making birdhouses again.

The house that started it all was made before we knew about important features such as; portal/entrance protectors, holes for ventilation and drainage, accessible cleanouts and the variety of portal/entrance sizes and shapes. We now include these features in all of our birdhouses to help create a comfortable, safe environment for the birds.

We try to use reclaimed materials as much as possible. This includes salvaged woods and other materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. We put a lot of effort into keeping the interiors as natural as possible and protecting the exteriors with exterior paint, clear coat, linseed oil and/or water sealer.

With the exception of some of the unique textures, patterns and shapes (cut by my husband on his CNC Router), everything is handmade. To keep up to date on all of our latest designs, colours and *hole sizes and shapes; LIKE our Facebook page. We’d really appreciate it if you would SHARE our Facebook page with your friends and family. The more birds the better for the environment, our gardens and our general peace of mind. Enjoy!

* Note: The hole size and shape will determine the type of bird attracted to the birdhouse.
